All Chimneys Need A Cap To:
ELIMINATE MOISTURE DAMAGE FROM THE RAIN
Moisture in the chimney erodes the mortar joints and
can cause damper and firebox rusting, leading to
expensive repairs.
KEEP OUT INVADING BIRDS AND ANIMALS
Nesting birds, squirrels, raccoons, and other critters
can block the chimney and cause smoke damage or
even carbon monoxide poisoning. If you forget to close your damper they can enter your house and wreck havoc or, if the damper is closed, they will die and create an odor problem since most birds and animals accidentally fall down the chimney and can not get back out.
PROTECT AGAINST EMBERS AND SPARKS
The cap's 18-gauge mesh reduces the risk of fire from
sparks escaping from your chimney.
GUARD AGAINST FLUE BLOCKAGE
Falling leaves and debris can enter the chimney causing
a blockage
We consider the chimney cap to be essential for every chimney and carry the excellent Gelco brand of single and multi-flue stainless steel tops. These are warranted for life, and being stainless steel, will not rust and cause brown staining on your chimney. Copper caps are also available and these will weather an "antiqued" greenish- brown.
Wind related back puffing problems can often be cured with the Vacu-Stack chimney cap pictured here to the left. As wind hits the Vacu-stack, it actually increases the draft in proportion to the speed of the wind. It will not, however, cure an otherwise poorly drawing or downdrafting flue.
The Flue Stretcher cap can solve two problems:
1) Reduce the effects of negative house pressure which can cause smoking from an unused flue. Smoke exiting one flue can be pulled down an adjacent flue that is downdrafting. By raising the flue of the operating fireplace or stove, the smoke is less likely to be pulled down the other flue.
2) Increase draft. By putting the opening above nearby structures you improve draft and reduce downdrafts.
The Multi-flue model attaches securely to the chimney crown with screws.
The Single-flue model mounts on top of the terra cotta liner or can be adapted to screw to the crown it there is no liner protruding from the top.
European Copper Pots by Jack Arnold are an attractive option to protect and decorate your chimney while also extending the flue height.
